The Kashmir Files is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language film based upon real events. The film is based on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits during the Kashmir Insurgency.[5] It stars Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Pallavi Joshi and Mithun Chakraborty.[6] The film was theatrically released on 11 March 2022.[7]
The film became a box office success,[8][9] but critical reception has been mixed.[10] The cinematography and the performances of the cast (particularly Kher's) has been descibed as compelling,[14] but the film has faced accusations of historical revisionism,[17] and of being propaganda aligned with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),[20] aiming to foster prejudice against Muslims.[21] The film was endorsed, promoted and provided with tax-free status in multiple states by the BJP.
